With the announcement that videos in Stories that are under 60 seconds in length will no longer be split into 15-second pieces in the app, Instagram is continuing its steady process of combining its video offerings into one.
When you upgrade your Instagram app, you'll get a notification letting you know that your videos in Stories will no longer be split up, creating a more seamless viewing experience, as you can see in this in-app alert tweeted by social media analyst Matt Navarra.
Over the past year, Instagram has been testing the update with a small group of users as part of a larger effort to integrate its video options in line with the transition to short-form video and general interaction trends.
In July, Instagram stated that all uploaded films under 15 minutes in length would be posted as Reels, further integrating its different video forms. In October last year, Instagram abolished its IGTV brand after combining IGTV and feed videos into one format.
By making all of its video content, in all forms, accessible in more locations where users are interacting, the merger of its video options aims to make the app more user-friendly while also, presumably, assisting Instagram in maximising user engagement.
Over 15% of the information in Instagram feeds now originates from people, organisations, or accounts that users do not follow, according to Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg, who also emphasised that AI recommendations are improving the user experience more and more. By the end of next year, according to Zuckerberg, that figure should have more than doubled.
Instagram has confirmed the new Stories video expansion to TechCrunch, explaining that:
“We are always working on ways to improve the Stories experience. Now, you’ll be able to play and create Stories continuously for up to 60 seconds, instead of being automatically cut into 15-second clips.”
Since you won't have to touch through every frame, it will also be simpler for you to go through longer videos you aren't interested in watching, however it may have repercussions for creators who have structured sponsored content partnerships based on frame counts rather than Story length.
Longer term, length will be the goal, which is a pretty simple remedy. However, as the Stories eco-system changes to accommodate the new procedure, it can cause some issues in the near future.
According to Instagram, all users are now able to access the new, lengthier video Stories.
